This is a view from seaward in towards McMurdo. The mountain on left is Mt. Erebus, an active volcano. McMurdo Station is around the mountain then to the left.
Glacier is leading followed by Eastwind then the USNS Alatna, the 1st supply ship into McMurdo this year. This was 17 Dec 1966.
The ice we are passing through is pack ice. It's from 4 to 10 feet thick and fairly hard. This is about 9/10's coverage.

This again is Glacier, Eastwind and Alatna. Good view of the channel we broke. It extends for 18 miles and it opens out so that it's 3 miles wide at the mouth.
This shot also shows the problem we had. The wind blew from seaward towards the shore and all the ice we had broken stayed in the channel and refrose. The ice here is called "fast" ice because it is made fast to the shore. The ice in the channel is called brash. Note the seals laying along the fast ice on the right side of the picture.
The visibility here is fantastic. Those mountains on the left are 50 - 60 miles away and the ones just barely visible on the right are 130 miles away. |

This is a view from the Glacier just passing Hut Point. Headed for the lower left hand corner of the picture. Note the mountains in the background are 50 miles away. Picture taken about 4 o'clock in the morning.

This is a view with Hut Point on the right. Glacier has made turn into Winter Quarters bay. Eastwind is still in the same attitude as the previous picture.

Glacier is clearing the pier face for Alatna to tie up. The pier, where the men are standing, is ice is 30 - 50 feet thick covered with graded soil. |

|
Glacier has moved away from the pier face and Alatna is preparing to tie up. This was about 36 hours after the first picture of us coming from seaward and its only a distance of about 25 miles.

This is Glacier working on the channel. McMurdo is onthe other side of the penisular in the backgorund. Note the thickness of the upturned places of ice near the bow. The black spots on the ice behind the ship and above the gun are seals. |
